Golden Throne throwbacks

The Golden Throne rivalry between Clarkston and Lewiston high schools has been brewing for 23 years, and the shade continues to be thrown. As serious as the event is, humor still surfaces in the rivalry.
One hilarious mix-up was recorded in the 2003 Golden Throne edition of The Bengal’s Purr:
“At the culmination of the evening, the announcer proclaimed the Lewiston Bengals as the winners of Golden Throne. [. . .] Lewiston fans swarmed the court and celebrated the victory. However, their 15 minutes of fame halted as a bookkeeping error, discovered by Clarkston athletic director Len Kelly, ruled that Clarkston actually won. ‘I think we deserved the Throne,’ proclaimed senior class president,Nick Grove, ‘but we still have the plunger!’”
When it came to competition in 2014, the rival schools had differing priorities, as shown in the 2014 Golden Throne edition of The Bengal’s Purr:
“I’ve been on a diet of raw chicken and winning this whole week, so I see a gilded toilet in LHS’s future,” said Garett Ulhorn of Lewiston.
That combative statement was matched with a less than competitive remark:
“The shorter the shorts, the more the spirit,” said Anna Dolezal of Clarkston.
The cut-throat environment brings out the best and worst from the players. Both schools have been known to take the aggressive road, supported by Lewiston’s Drew Melton when he said in 2014, “There’s only one thing that tastes better than chicken… and it‘s victory.”
And Rachel Folsom chimed in that year: “What do we eat? Bengal meat. How do we like it? Raw! Raw! Raw!”
As competitive the rival schools have been over the years, they never fail to come together for the community. Not only is the event a great way for the community to gather, it also raises money for charity. Over the last 23 years, LHS and CHS have cumulatively raised $143,310.50 for charity.
