A Boise School Board trustee, Shiva Rajbhandari, was arrested Sept. 18, for obstructing pedestrian traffic and failing to comply with a lawful order to disperse, according to the Boise Weekly. The protest, which called for the end of financing of fossil fuels, occurred in front of the Federal Reserve in New York City, blocking several entrances into the building. According to Rajbhandari, around 149 people were arrested.
“Playing by the rules hasn’t worked. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished with climate action in Boise and the Boise School District, but it’s not enough,” Rajbhandari told The Bengal’s Purr. “Ultimately, only the federal government has the power to tackle the climate crisis at the speed and scale that science requires and our communities deserve.”
Rajbhandari, now 19, is the youngest trustee on the Boise School Board, being elected at 18 in 2022 with 56.4% of votes.
