Senior Cale Wilponen will represent LHS at the state level in Pocatello on Dec. 2.
The LHS drama club attended the district drama competition Nov. 18 in Coeur d’Alene. 13 members from Lewiston’s drama department attended. Upon arriving at the competition, participants find their designated performance locations and go through their three waves. Some of the pieces presented at drama districts are entirely original, with scripts crafted by the competitors themselves. Judging is based on both skills in acting and writing.
While the district competition provides a unique opportunity to showcase talents and bond with peers, it can also be a challenge in both practice and execution. “Districts are kind of stressful trying to prepare and rehearse as much as possible. It can be hard getting schedules to match up. And it is nerve-racking, especially when you bring a piece that is original…” said senior Chayli Chastain.
Chastain has been involved in various drama programs since seventh grade and has been a part of the LHS drama club since her sophomore year. The district competition has been one of the many highlights of her drama career thus far: “It is honestly one of my favorite drama events we do each year, and I am so glad I have been able to do it two years in a row.”
Despite the obstacles they may face along the way, Lewiston attendees remain optimistic about their chances and, most of all, excited for what lies in store for them. “I’m most excited about the memories I [get to] create with the drama kids who are going. And I’m super excited to see all of the other pieces people are bringing and that they wrote,” said Chastain.
