Senior Cole Lockart has received the Navy ROTC scholarship, and he is the first student in Lewiston High School’s history to do so.
The scholarship will pay in full for housing, tuition, and food for upward of five years. Lockart will receive up to $200,000 in tuition benefits and $250- $400 a month in tax-free spending money. With this scholarship, Lockart plans to attend the University of Colorado to pursue his passion for electrical engineering.
Part of the reason Lockart joined the Navy is because of his family.
“I had an uncle who was in the Navy, so I naturally gravitated towards it,” he said,
Lockart was evaluated on not only his academics, but also on teacher evaluations, physical fitness, military background in the family, and officer review.
Some basic requirements to apply for this scholarship are to be a US citizen, be 17 years of age by Sept. 1 of the first year of college, and to complete high school. Applicants also have to take the SAT or ACT, and get a minimum score of 540 math, 550 verbal evidence-based reading and writing, and 1100 combined. For the ACT, applicants need a minimum of 21 math, 22 English, and 44 combined.
Some opportunities the NROTC program can lead to are employment, travel, the opportunity to lead and manage personnel, and medical and life insurance.
