With the recent news that Cirque du Soleil’s long-running show “The Beatles: Love” will end on July 7, The Beatles’ legendary drummer, Ringo Starr, has drastically shifted his beliefs. Starr has been known for advocating for “peace and love” throughout his career; however, recently, he’s chosen a new mantra.
In a video posted on his website, Starr addresses his fans with seriousness and explains his decision.
“I’ve come to realize that ‘peace and love’ are only empty words,” Starr told fans. “They sound nice, but they don’t solve anything. ‘War and hate,’ however, have a certain raw power.”
The announcement has left fans bewildered and divided. Many struggle to accept this drastic departure from the “peace and love” persona Starr has always projected. Some have even speculated that this shift may result from a desire to reinvent his brand following the release of his “Hate and War” EP album, whose title song includes the lyrics, “Now I’ve found a new way to be/ War and hate, they define me/ Turning to darkness for a brand new start.” Starr later sings, “Love may be strong/ But hate is stronger/ Together we can make war and hate our new mantra forever.”
Starr also announced he would begin to change the lyrics to his already-released songs, with “It Don’t Come Easy” being the first. The title is set to change to “It Comes Easy,” and the lyrics “Got to pay your dues if you wanna sing the blues/ And you know it don’t come easy/ You don’t have to shout or leap about/ You can even play them easy/ Please remember peace is how we make it” will be changed to “ Don’t pay your dues or I’ll make your skin all black-and-blue/ And you know it comes easy/ I will make you shout and leap about/ You can never play them easy/ Please remember peace isn’t how we make it”
However, amidst the criticism, some are intrigued by the move, arguing that his decision to embrace “war and hate” may serve as a wake-up call.
As the world watches, eager to see how this unexpected chapter in Starr’s life unfolds, one thing is for sure, his departure from the mantra “peace and love” has left an indelible mark on his legacy.
