Each year, Lewiston High School’s outdoor recreation P.E. class makes the trip to the University of Idaho Climbing Center in Moscow. Students get the opportunity to explore 6,000 square feet of climbing area, including a 24ft instructional wall and a staggering 55ft pillar with individual skill level paths wrapping all the way around.
Most recently, about 55 students made the trip with Adam Cadez-schmidt and Allison Lathen. Throughout the half-day trip, students could be seen testing their finger strength, bouldering, belaying, and swaying, suspended in the air on their way back down the wall.
The experience gave students the opportunity to explore new challenges, climb past their limits, as well as build trust in themselves and those around them. Junior Samuel Huff said, “I enjoyed climbing and it was a new experience that I definitely wouldn’t have done otherwise without being in Outdoor Rec.”
With no cost administered to the students, the only thing required to attend this trip is parental/guardian approval. Friendly and experienced staff greet visitors to go over safety rules and precautions and add helpful tips to improve the experience. Shoes, harnesses, and other climbing equipment are included upon entering. An admission fee of $10 per person is required when entry for regular visitors, and anyone under 18 must have a parent or guardian accompanying them. Partners wishing to belay on the rock pillar are given a quick and clear lesson on how to do so safely, and as an extra precaution, are required to perform their skills under the supervision of staff before being released to explore the heights and challenges the pillar offers.
