The Lewiston High School swim team recently competed at the state level in Boise, Idaho.
Getting to state is an accomplishment in itself. Swimmers accumulate points during competitions throughout the season, and those points help them qualify for the competition. Additionally, the district’s competition is a large deciding factor in who gets to compete.
At districts, the LHS women’s team in the 5A Division paced third and got 128 points. Likewise, the men’s 5A Division placed third with 80 points.
There are multiple competitions at state level, however, only select members of the team were able to compete. For example, “Only the A girls’ relay team got to go,” sophomore Adali Wimer said.
Although making it to state is a challenge, many of the LHS swim team were able to go. Jayla Ackerland, Ryann Schraufngel, Filippo Greggio, and Adali Wimer are just some of the athletes who attended.
“I swim the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle for my individuals,” said Ryann Schraufngel. “I won first in both my events in districts.” By winning first, Ryann was automatically qualified for the state competition.
The boys’ and the girls’ teams compete separately, however, they travel together and attend the events together.
Deegan Everett swam the 100 butterfly and the 50 freestyle in the competition. He had to place the top 14 in the state in districts to make it, and he did!
