Jenna Clift is heading to state competition Dec. 6-7, representing LHS Drama in Twin Falls.
Clift competed at the district level to determine who was going to state. Clift presented a solo musical theater piece called “No One Else” from Natasha Pierre on the Great Comet of 1812. Clift completed three rounds of the competition and then was ranked by each judge and received points of 8, 9, and 10.
Clift explained how the judges determine who goes to state.
“Essentially there’s a rank system and then a point system, so you go into a room with people in your section and then they rank you from that room, and along with a rank, they give you points from 1-10 –, usually it’s just from 5-10 because they don’t want to be that brutal,” Clift said.
For state-level competition, she will be performing the same musical piece.
Starting as a second-grader in Bellingham, Washington, Clift has gained years of theater experience. Currently, Clift is a part of the high school Drama Club and the Lewiston Civic Theater.
She said her sister motivated her to try theater.
“My sister has always done drama since she was in high school. I always saw her performances and I was just really inspired by her,” Clift said.
Clift said she feels good knowing she is going to state.
“Usually, when you’re doing something as subjective as acting, it’s hard to know whether you’re good or not,” Clift said, “so I guess going to state can be very verifying.”
