The annual Golden Throne basketball game between Lewiston High School and Clarkston High School, has been acquiring donations this month through selling spirit packs, collecting change for the coin drive, auctioning off items, and many more fun activities to fundraise money for two non-profit organizations. Lewiston High School is donating all proceeds to SPIN, Suicide Prevention of the Inland Northwest, and Clarkston High School is donating to the Gina Quesenberry Foundation.
SPIN, Suicide Prevention of the Inland Northwest, aims to reduce the rate of suicide and to, as the website states, “reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and mental health in our region through education and awareness.” To try and counteract the increased suicide rates within the state of Idaho, SPIN partners locally with The Willow Center, Twin County United Way, Cambia Health Solutions, Lewis-Clark Valley Healthcare Foundation, the Lewiston Tribune, Lewis Clark State College, Regence BlueShield of Idaho and Pepsi.
The Gina Quesenberry Foundation provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients in the Lewiston-Clarkston area who cannot afford treatment. The foundation funds itself via donations and fundraising, equally distributing the profits to local breast cancer patients. The Gina Quesenberry website states the foundation has, “given over $460,000 to men and women going through breast cancer in the LC Valley.” The foundation is dedicated to the memory of Gina Quesenberry who passed away on Dec. 9, 2005, when her cancer reached her lungs.
LHS is trying to reach its stretch goal of raising $20,000 before the Golden Throne game. Staff members and ASB have put risky bets in place to encourage donations such as dying hair, shaving heads, and more.
