Creative Writing: A class for anyone

Creative Writing is offered at Lewiston High School as an elective class, taught by Darlene McCann.

It’s a class where students can express themselves through writing, and some may even discover a hidden love for writing.

“I like to see students explore their voice,” McCann said.

McCann also teaches English Honors 10, which is a much more structured, challenging class for sophomores.

Lukas Lowe took Creative Writing his sophomore year and WHEN his writing was published in issue 56 of the Talking River Review with Lewis-Clark State College

McCann encouraged Lowe to enter the LCSC Creative Writing Competition, and two of his poems were published: “6 Letter Word” and “Bonfire.”

Creative Writing is like a breath of fresh air for McCann and her students, like Phoenix Lemus.

“I like the freedom we get,” Lemus said. “It’s less restrictive, and there’s more creativity put into the writing.”

Creative Writing is split into focus areas, such as the poetry unit, the short story unit, and the children’s picture book unit.

“The poetry unit is always my favorite because there is a lot of variety in the poetry, and [students] learn how to express themselves,” said McCann.

Students can sign up for Creative Writing during the school-wide registration period and it is open to any student in any grade.

Creative Writing is a class for any student who wants to find their voice and make it even louder.
