The Lewiston National Honors Society is creating a hand-painted mural located in a central hallway in the school. This project is hoped to be completed by early March.
The NHS focuses on doing a few projects each year that help the community and school, such as the blood drive, which they put on twice a year. This year, the club’s primary community outreach will be the creation of a mural at Lewiston High School.
The goal of the mural is to “boost morale…and the aesthetic…and [try]to make it a kind of more inviting environment,” said Jamie Bakker, the AP Language and Composition and Relationships teacher who runs NHS at the school.
Students will serve their required community service hours by working on the mural.
Students submitted their artwork for the mural in January and the NHS members selected the best submission.
National Honors Society (NHS) focuses on high-achieving students and excellence. National Honors Society is “an organization that recognizes civic duty like service [and] philanthropy, as well as academics,” Bakker informed.
To get inducted into NHS, students must have a 3.5 GPA and have taken two AP or honors courses by the end of junior year. Meeting these requirements means students will be in NHS senior year.
