"Defying Gravity": The Enchanting Revival of Wicked on Broadway

Wicked is a fantastic sequel to all of the other musicals

Wicked, which bills itself as the untold story of the Oz witches, serves as a prequel to the classic 1930 movie The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; Wicked officially hit theaters on November 22, telling the story of how Elphaba Thropp becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.

The cast includes Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda, the two main characters in the movie. Jonathan Bailey plays Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh plays Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum plays the Wizard. Finally, the tale on Broadway for over two decades is moving to the silver screen.

Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future wicked witch of the West, and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The movie is set during Elphaba’s school days when she first befriended Glinda.

Wicked is a blend of excitement, comedy, musical, and fantasy. The film opens where The Wizard of Oz ends: the Wicked Witch of the West is dead, and the citizens of Oz celebrate with the song “No One Mourns the Wicked.” After this, Glinda reflects on the life of Elphaba, introducing the central question: Are people born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?

Wicked is one of the most successful stage musicals ever, according to Deadline; the world went wild in 2016 when the Wicked movie was announced. The film stays true to the stage musical. Producers and directors were sure not to remove an original song from the soundtrack. There are a couple of new musical numbers, “Defying Gravity” and “Popular”.

The film ends on a cliffhanger as Elphaba fully embraces her role as the Wicked Witch of the West. Sadly, fans will have to wait until November 21, 2025, for Part Two, which promises to explore the stories of the Scarecrow (Fiyero), Tin Man (Boq), and Dorothy.

This movie earns a 5/5 because the plot was so good it left viewers on the edge of their seats, and they cannot wait for Wicked Part Two. It was fun, exciting, and hilarious. All the actors had incredible voices and fit their parts perfectly. Everyone should watch this movie if they enjoyed The Wizard of Oz or any musical.
