After the National Honors Society (NHS) members reviewed the art submissions for the NHS mural, they chose a design at their Feb. 13 meeting.
The future mural includes a Bengal Tiger sitting in a river with mountains growing from its back. Isabelle Hastings, a senior, created the design, which NHS students voted on. They chose Hastings’ work because they wanted the community and school incorporated into the design, NHS supervisor Jammie Bakker explained. Hastings did this through the landscape, including school colors and the tiger.
The club plans to start work on the mural before spring break in the Bitterroot Hall. According to Bakker, they chose this hallway because NHS members saw it as lacking personality. They hope to complete the mural by the end of the school year and eventually have murals in other halls.
All students in NHS are required to participate in the project, and by working on the mural, students in NHS will earn volunteer hours. They then must participate in another community service project as well to meet the community service hours needed to graduate as an NHS member in their senior year.
