Josephine ‘Jo’ Carbaugh was nominated for the Bengal’s Purr’s annual senior feature by Melissa Syverson, Lewiston’s speech, debate, and drama teacher. Carbaugh embodies the spirit of a Bengal in everything she has done since she came to the high school in her sophomore year.
When talking about Carbaugh, Syeverson said, “ Jo is the type of student that literally lifts my mood the moment I see her. She is someone who is easy to love; she is compassionate and accepting of everyone.”
During all three years that Carbaugh was at LHS, she was on the school’s honor roll. When asked what she would miss most about high school, Carbaugh replied, “I’m going to miss the people in Lewiston.”
Most people who attend LHS know Carbaugh for her extensive work with the drama department over the last few years. During her junior year, she was named ‘Best Techie’ for her work on Lewiston’s spring musical, Beauty and the Beast.
“Jo has been Bengal Drama’s tech director and primary stage director for two years… she has staffed stage crew for nearly every show we’ve done in that time. She is an incredible leader and sets an example for underclassmen that is based on collaboration and courtesy,” said Syverson.
Carbaugh will be attending the University of Idaho (U of I) in Moscow, Idaho, and majoring in the university’s architecture program. Aside from the architecture program itself, Carbaugh said she is most excited to attend school events at U of I. She also hopes to minor in the interior architecture program.
When Carbaugh was asked why she wanted to attend U of I, she replied, “I chose U of I because of the architecture program. My mom is an alumna and she has always spoken highly of the school and they’re well-known architecture program.”
Carbaugh plans to use her degree to preserve historical sites and buildings. However, outside of a career, Carbaugh reported that going into architecture was motivated by some of her other passions.
“I love helping people and designing spaces and want to do that after college as well.”
All in all, Carbaugh has been a phenomenal addition to Lewiston for the few years she has attended our school and has impacted so many lives, whether it be the staff or her fellow peers at LHS. It seems that Carbaugh will do great things in her future, no matter what she does, and we are excited to see what she accomplishes outside of high school.
