Driskill retires as principal

The halls of Lewiston High School will soon see a change as Principal Kevin Driskill announces their retirement at the end of this school year. Looking back at his leadership positions, along with his teaching experience of 19 years, he said he has always wanted to lead and help instructors in any capacity he could.

Driskill taught and coached for 19 years at Kendrick High School. He has a degree in Educational Leadership. His kids had grown up in the Lewiston School District as he drove back and forth to Kendrick, he remembered. Driskill’s kids wanted to stay in Lewiston, so he started applying for administrative jobs here.

He got an Assistant Principal position at LHS in 2011. After that year, he took an Elementary position in the district and was later asked to be the Athletic Director at LHS. The same year when he was working as Athletic Director, then-principal Lance Hansen was invited to join the District Office as the Assistant Superintendent. In 2013, Driskill became the LHS Principal.

His greatest accomplishment as a principal has been “opening the best high school in the state,” he said.

“Honestly, though, the relationships I have now with students, former students, staff, and former staff are the highest on my list. I have lifelong relationships that I will cherish forever,” Driskill added.

“I tell people all the time, I have two biological children, and 1,300 more each year. Not many people can say that about their professions,” Driskill said.

The job has had some big challenges, too.

“The single most difficult thing you can face in this position is losing a student. It breaks so many hearts,” Driskill said. “COVID was terrible as well. School, all activities, and your social life were taken away. It was terrible.”

Driskill’s plan after retirement is to go elk hunting all fall. He will split his time here in Lewiston and in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, with his girlfriend, Heidi McRoberts, a Forest Supervisor on the Cibola Forest in New Mexico. He also plans to find another job to keep busy.

He wishes the next LHS principal, David Kronemann, good luck.

“ It is a difficult position with many people counting on you. I would tell him to enjoy it and not dwell on the naysayers,” Driskill said. “We have the best staff, students, and facilities in Idaho!”
