Cheer jumps into state, then onto nationals
The LHS Varsity team travelled to Anaheim, California, March 23-26 for Nationals. The Bengals made LHS history as the first team to to travel to National competition, competing in the advance super varsity-level division.
“We didn’t place, but we threw a pretty much perfect routine. We were up against schools with 36 cheerleaders on the mat while we only had 22,” said senior Morgan Fields. “Overall, it was a great experience for us to compete at a national level.”
Closer to home, the Lewiston cheer team swept districts Feb. 25 at Post Falls High School, placing first in stunt, pom, sideline, main routine and as overall grand champions.
The district event was the first time this season that the team participated in sideline competition.
“Without competing in sideline we probably wouldn’t have been grand champions,” said senior cheerleader Kinsey Sparks.
Lewiston was the only team from the district to move on to state. Usually Lewiston competes as a co-ed team but this year they are an all-girl team, Sparks said.
At the state-level competition March 18, the Bengals placed second in show or main routine and placed fifth overall in the 5A division at the Idaho Ford Center in Boise.
“[State was] bittersweet to say the very least,” said Natalie Wilson, who will graduate this Spring. “There’s no one in the world I would have rather competed with than my girls. The experience was unforgettable and it’s a feeling I will always treasure.”
