In a night filled with robberies, camping trips gone wrong and dad jokes, the One-Act Showcase filled audiences with many different emotions as the night progressed.
Students, staff and community members gathered in the LHS auditorium April 21 and 22 to witness the writing and directing talents of the Lewiston High School drama department through their original one-act productions. The drama students took the opportunity to write and direct their own plays, showcasing a variety of comedies, tearjerkers, satires and dramas.
The writers and directors of the shows included LHS seniors Jada Cortese, Alex Dietz, Marshall Fisher, Tony Murillo and Hannah Seale; and juniors Sirius Adamson, Annie Ball, Zach Haas and Jessica Leckie. The showcase included titles such as “Dad’s Anonymous,” “The Calm Before the Storm,” “Dinner Guest,” “Hopeless Control,” “A Typical Family Robbery,” “Addict,” “Good Sir,” “6:00 News,” “When Friends Come to Visit” and “Campfire Stories.”    Leckie wrote and directed “Addict” for the one-act showcase. She said she felt stressed throughout the entire process, but tried to put her best foot forward.
“Overall, the experience was something I would never trade for anything. Working with my peers and getting to see the final product always makes my heart swell,” said Leckie.
Her script, “Addict,” was about a young man, Michael, who struggles with addiction, personified by the character Damien. Michael’s friend, Angela, tries to set him back on the right path and bring him out of his hard time.
Fisher portrayed the addiction itself as a person and a “friend” of the main character.
“Damien is a manipulative and abusive demon who acts like Michael’s friend, only to gain power and control over him,.” Fisher explained.
“A very close friend of mine revealed that they used to be addicted to drugs, and still struggles with smoking,” Leckie said. “This fueled me to let out my frustration on addiction through my one-act,” said Leckie.     Many of the actors who participated in the showcase had earned drama letter through the International Thespian Society.
“It takes a lot of sacrificing your time and patience for the club,” Leckie said.
