Confidence hit the stage as sophomores ran for office.
A smooth election went down in the LHS auditorium Sept. 6, reported Jim Silvestri, leadership adviser.
“There were nine candidates running, which is very encouraging to the rest of their class, and there were no problems with cheating this year,” said Silvestri.
The results were announced the following morning during the school bulletin. Harrison Smith won as sophomore president, Anella Tucker as vice president, Abigail Williams as secretary, and Tia Flaig as treasurer.
Last year’s elections included minor difficulties with dishonest voting, according to Silvestri. He chose to veer away from online voting this year.
Last year’s problems with sophomore class votes did not return this year, he said.
Smith and Logann Martin, both running for president, had two different experiences while delivering their speeches.
“I don’t really get nervous public speaking and my goal for Lewiston High School is to have it be as friendly as it can be and be a good environment,” said Smith.
His competitor Martin said she felt the exact opposite.
“I was confident, but nervous. My body was shaking the whole time,” said Martin, who added that a loss would only mean she might run again as a junior.
“Why not? I’m ambitious,” Martin commented.
