SAT redesigned this year
The SAT is new and redesigned for the class of 2017 to take this spring. The new SAT consists of only four academic sections and an essay, while the old SAT consisted of 10 different sections that were much shorter in length.
The sections include math without the use of a calculator, math with the use of a calculator, reading, and writing and language. The essay is optional for the new SAT but on the official SAT day at LHS, April 12, all students will write the essay, according to Rachael Evans, the LHS academic coordinator.
According to Collegeboard.org the test was redesigned because, “The world needs more people who can solve problems, communicate clearly, and understand complex relationships. The SAT Suite of Assessments focuses on the skills and knowledge that will help today’s students meet that need.”
The tests are designed to:
Measure the essential ingredients for college and career readiness and success, as shown by research.
Have a stronger connection to classroom learning.
Inspire productive practice.
The new SAT holds no penalty for guessing on questions. Students can see where they need to improve and teachers can adjust instruction for students who are ahead or behind. This is because sub-scores and cross scores will provide insight into more specific strengths and weaknesses, according to College Board website.
“The SAT is going to be different this year and the only way to know and prepare yourself is to run through questions,” said Evans.
She recommended that students visit Kahn Academy, which has multiple resources online available for test preparation including essay prompts, practice tests, and scoresheets.
