Plans have been put in motion to display a 9-ft. bronze Bengal statue outside of the front
entrance of LHS. Many high schools and colleges have bronze statues of their mascots,
such as Cougar Butch displayed east of Martin Stadium at Washington State University.
Statues like these were the initial inspiration for the LHS bronze Joe Bengal. The statue
is being created by local artist Shayne Watkins, who resides in Deary and is a 1984 LHS
graduate. Designs have been made, but the timeline for the final installation of the statue
may take upwards of two years.
