DC just released their newest superhero movie titled Blue Beetle. The film was released on August 18, 2023, and features the first live-action Latin American superhero.
The film follows teenager Jamie Reyes (Xolo Mariduena), who returns home to the fictional Palmera City after graduating college. Jamie comes home to the news that his family will lose their house due to debts. Jamie, desperate to find a new job, finds himself crossing paths with Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), who gives him the scarab that gives him the ability to become the Blue Beetle.
The chemistry between the Reyes family was one of the best parts of this film. Their love and connection felt natural like you were a part of the family. The Latin American aspects were beautiful, especially with the emotional scenes. The comedy from George Lopez, who plays Rudy Reyes, was another positive about this film. Xolo Mardiuena, known for his work on Cobra Kai, played a fantastic lead and was an excellent superhero. Mardiuna was one of the highlights of this film. The action was very entertaining and kept the audience on the edge of their seats.
The film was a typical superhero movie, making some moments predictable and cliche. The villains were nothing extraordinary and gave no backstory to them until the end, making it harder to feel sympathy for them. Overall, it was entertaining and a great watch from start to finish. It´s a perfect movie for the whole family to enjoy together, but there are some things that the film can improve on, which is why it deserves a 3.5/5.
