Following the success of the 2019 Powderpuff football game, in a meeting on March 5, the Lewiston High School athletic department declared a change in the way the LHS Bengals will play football.
Starting in the 2020-2021 school year, football will be an all-girls sport and cheer will be all-boys. Coaches will also switch in order to keep the bonds they’ve already built with their players.
Current football coach John Smith reported that he was excited to attempt coaching cheer for the first time. He hopes his football boys will enjoy cheerleading as a serious sport.
Not only does the athletic department hope that this will bring in bigger crowds and more donations, but administrators hope the change will start a nationwide movement to challenge high school students to defy assigned gender roles.
