Student gains new perspective with eSight

Drew Thomasson, the well-known, funny, quick-witted LHS senior, is always quick to crack a joke, but his eyesight has never been a laughing matter.
After losing his sight at age 7, Thomasson will now be able to see for the first time with the help of the eSight video glasses. The glasses, with the help of small magnetic computers, help visually enhance everything around him.
“They [eSight glasses] don’t correct vision. I’m completely blind in my right eye. It doesn’t help that,” said Thomasson in response to how the glasses work. “But in my left eye my vision is 2600. With the glasses it’s 20/25 — a huge enhancement.”
The computer snaps onto a pair of glasses Thomasson wears. The glasses will take some getting used to, around a year until they’re fully comfortable. If overworn, the glasses cause motion sickness and headaches.
“I wear them all the time at home. I just take awhile to get used to them,” said Thomasson. “I wore them to [see] Anything Goes. It was awesome!”
The Thomasson family discovered the eSight glasses online. The glasses were obtained through donations from the community. Drew is currently going through “training” to wear the glasses full time. The device has really opened his eyes, Thomasson said.
“I found out my dog is fat,” he responded when asked about any surprising sights. “Seeing my friends’ faces was the best thing.”
The eSight glasses also provide something that many people with typical eyesight wish they could have: Cameras built into the eyes.
“My favorite part is that they have a built-in camera so I can take a photo and it just saves it to the bluetooth chip,” said Thomasson.
His newfound sight will continue to positively influence his life with his upcoming radio segment on KLCZ and his greatest current  goal: Graduating with his class in June.
“My plan is to walk with them on stage during graduation,” Thomasson said. “Only two more months.”
With all the help from the community and kids at school, Thomasson said he  wants to express his gratitude.
“A BIG thanks to the community and the school, everyone who donated.”
