Cuthbert places 3rd at state tournament

The Bengals returned from the state tournament with six medalists, and Brice Cuthbert was one of them. Cuthbert placed 5th overall in his weight division on Feb 23.
Cuthbert has had a very successful wrestling season. The junior placed second at the IHSAA 5A District tournament Feb. 17, and he came in 4th at this year’s annual Clearwater Classic.
Coach Colton Maddy has reported that Cuthbert has stepped into a leadership role this season. Heading into districts, Cuthbert had a record of 33-12 and finished 7th at this year’s Tri-State tournament. Toward the end of this season, he had at least 166 takedowns, breaking the record set by Tracy Huffman in 2009.
“With districts and state left to wrestle, Brice looks very promising to break 175
takedowns and get on the podium at the state tournament,” Maddy reported.
Cuthbert said he believes that having a good mindset and staying positive are among the most significant challenges for an athlete.
He said his motivation comes from his teammates and his coaches, Colton and Deven Maddy. He told the Purr that his coaches are a big part of getting to where he is today and practicing hard daily.
Cuthbert’s passion for wrestling comes from his dad.
“My dad got me into it when I was a kid, and it has stuck with me since then,” Cuthbert said.
He added that he wants to thank his family, coaches, trainers, and teammates for getting him where he is today.
