The 2026-2027 academic calendar, despite some misunderstandings, has not been finalized, according to Superintendent Tim Sperber.
The Lewiston School District Calendar Committee, comprising teachers from all schools, plus two administrators, and a board member, has been exploring ways to enhance the academic calendar for students and staff. While the calendar was in progress, Sperber said, information regarding a potential earlier start date was made public, causing concern among the community.
Alongside the rumors, community feedback from letters, emails, and social media posts about the calendar issue indicated that the survey used to collect data and input felt unclear and biased among respondents.
“I want to acknowledge these perspectives and thank everyone who has taken time to offer input,” said Sperber.
On Nov. 17, the committee reconvened and reviewed feedback from the letters and emails and reccommended that there will be no changes to the 26-27 school academic calendar.
To prevent this issue and confusion from reoccuring, Sperber said the District Calendar Committee will expand its membership. Starting with the 2027-2028 academic year, it will include a broader representation of stakeholders, including parents, students, staff, and the community.
“This will ensure the process remains transparent, inclusive, and reflective of the full school community,” stated Sperber.
