Slam poet, Myrlin Hepworth

Myrlin Hepworth, an accomplished artist and LHS alum, gave presentations and workshops with his poetry and music in the LHS auditorium Sept. 10-12.

Myrlin is accomplished in both hip-hop and the literary arts. He graduated from LHS in 2005 before moving to Phoenix, Arizona, where he finished his college education. He was the recipient of the Arizona Humanity Council’s Rising Star Award for his work as a youth advocate and teaching artist. Over the better part of a decade, he has traveled over many states to visit schools, as well as writing workshops in prisons, to speak about his experiences and how he incorporated writing and music in his everyday life.

This thing I was carrying in high school like a zombie — this pain, this unsettled thing that I had inside of me — I unmasked it and these people saw it. And together, we healed just a little bit.

— Myrlin Hepworth

At LHS this week his presentations were attended by students from English, Journalism and similar classes during their respective class periods. Many students watched him captivated by his gestures and tone in presenting his pieces. He performed his written works with themes of racism, colorism, religion and other themes that many people are too afraid to address. He emphasized the need for awareness and understanding. He shared his experiences of struggle and victory to encourage the young people to be brave, honest and to follow their dreams.

Myrlin will hold a public young adult poetry workshop at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, and an open mic event at 6 p.m. Both events are at the Asotin County Library, 417 Sycamore St. in Clarkston.
