Sophomore effort from The 1975 impresses

The 1975 may be fresh faces in the music world, but they’re already proving themselves as major players in the game. Their latest record, I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It, released Feb. 26, is sure to win more respect and fans.
This record pushes the band forward by accomplishing many different things. The elements that made its self-titled debut record special in the hearts of many come back even stronger.
The 1975’s style of alternative rock balances sounding ethereal and poppy. Both flavors combine again for one succulent treat. This is a dreamy record. The electronics, airy vocals and mellow guitars make for a wonderful listen.
Woven into the album’s lush soundscapes is catchy, accessible pop. The hooks here are a blast and never feel forced or cheap. I Like It When You Sleep contains some infectious earworms guaranteed to stay with the listener, such as “Love Me” and “The Sound.”
Everything about this album shines bright. The instrumentation throws in things like brass, strings, keyboards and synthesizers.  Adding to the diversity are a few instrumental tracks and an acoustic song, “She Lays Down.”
The lyrics on this album also stand strong. They are honest and well-crafted, and establish the band’s voice. The heartfelt tune, “Nana”, includes the lyrical highlight, “I got my pen and thought that I’d write a melody and line for you tonight. I think that’s how I make things feel all right.”
A 1980s tinge is present here. This gives the LP a retro vibe while remaining planted in contemporary youth. The ‘80s influences go a long way to add to the album’s life and longevity.
I Like It When You Sleep is no sophomore slump, as it surpasses the band’s debut record. It is a cohesive effort full of color and personality. Members of The 1975 prove themselves to be a pop rock band that manages to be organic and full of heart. For this, I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It earns an 8.5 out of 10.
