Sometimes sitting in the car, trying to get out of Cecil-Andrus Way, can be a long, annoying wait that can also be unsafe. Some people drive without precaution on that road, while others get nervous and sit there waiting. When people do that, others get mad. It is a long, narrow road that breaks into a dirt road and a regular road at the end. On top of anger and narrow streets, teenagers are driving here at LHS, some of whom aren’t quite responsible and make mistakes that could be detrimental. Lots of people drive in lots of ways, safe, unsafe, fast, or too slow, and the known fact about all of this is that some roads here are dangerous for new drivers, and people who drive without caution.Â
Although people here at LHS have opinions about the road’s safety, there are some contradictory factors. According to Craig Hannum, a safety officer here, there have been 4 minor crashes here this year that we know of. Luckily, everybody came out safe and healthy, and nobody was hurt.Â
A lot of people get frustrated exiting the parking lot and also getting out of Cecil Andrus’ way. Road rage is causing some fights between parents and children. More towards the start of the year, teenagers are told to stop at a certain point in the road, and they don’t. After talking to Katie Whitlock, the resource officer here, she shared that sometimes she likes to go upstairs and sometimes watch with binoculars to see if people stop appropriately; they usually do not.Â
Some argue that it is safe and there’s nothing that should change. However, when has there ever been a meeting with driving students about safety and ways to stay calm when other drivers are anxious or new to driving?Â
There are ways to fix these problems. Even if there aren’t any thoughts, there is. Fixing issues with the parking lot and holding meetings about how attitudes could change would lead to many improvements. There are so many significant aspects of LHS, and improving a few small things could make this school even better. So the next time there is anger or confusion, think of a way to re-route those thoughts.Â
