Both Idaho Vandals basketball teams made March Madness on March 11. It was the first time in 36 years that the men’s team made it, and the first timein 10 years for the women’s team.March Madness is a college basketball tournament held every year inMarch and April, with 64 teams. There is one winner in the end.The men’s team lost to the Houston Cougars, 78-47, on March 19 in Oklahoma City, and the women’s team lost to the Oklahoma Sooners, 89-59, onMarch 20 in Norman, Oklahoma. While both teams got eliminated in the first round, there was still plentyto celebrate about both teams’ seasons. For example, the men’s team cameinto the Big Sky Tournament as the 7-seed and went on to win the tournament. The women’s team also won the Big Sky tournament as the 1-seed.
For both teams, this was their fifth appearance in March Madness.
Just 30 miles away from the University of Idaho in Moscow, students andstaff at LHS had things to say about the Vandals season.
“I think it’s a huge deal — it’s cool to see them succeed at all,” said BlazeDugger, who teaches English at LHS. “They haven’t made it in so long.”
Weston Hoover, a 10th grader, agreed.
“I love the Vandals — it’s awesome,” Hoover said.
